Spanish Charity Halts Migrant Rescues Over Fuel Costs

Spanish charity Salvamento Maritimo Humanitario postponed its Central Mediterranean migrant rescue mission until 2027 due to doubled fuel prices, shifting operations to waters near Valencia. About 60,000 migrants reached Europe by boat in 2026, down 39 percent from 98,000 last year, with at least 2,292 dead or missing.
