Hurricane, murder verdict, and ninth journalist killed in Mexico
What it means
Hurricane Simon is a Category 4 storm with 150mph winds off Mexico's Pacific coast, threatening flooding and mudslides. A Mexican judge convicted three men of murdering three surfers in Baja California in April 2024, and journalist Hamurabi Huesca Manzano was shot dead in Oaxaca.
Why it matters
The Oaxaca killing is Mexico's ninth journalist death this year, per Article 19. The Baja convictions cover the April 2024 murders of Australians Callum, 30, and Jake Robinson, 33, and American Carter Rhoad, 30.
How it affects you
If you are in the path of Hurricane Simon's 150mph winds, a hurricane warning is in effect south of the storm's center. Travelers to Baja California or Oaxaca face the same conditions that led to these killings.
